Choosing a platform to create an online store is one of the most critical decisions for any entrepreneur aiming to grow their business online. Today, there are numerous solutions available for launching and managing e-commerce, with the Ukrainian platform SoloMono and the globally popular Shopify standing out.

Each platform has strengths and can be an ideal choice depending on the business specifics. However, each comes with its unique features, strengths, and limitations that should be considered when making a choice.

In this article, we’ll compare these platforms based on key parameters to help entrepreneurs choose the best solution for their business.

A Quick Overview of Shopify

Shopify, one of the most popular and widely used e-commerce platforms on the market, is essentially web-based software for e-commerce that allows users to easily create and manage online stores.

Users can choose from various themes and customize them to reflect their brand’s design, aesthetics, and business goals.

The core idea behind Shopify is to enable beginners and marketers to quickly set up their first online store. However, this does not mean that developers find it difficult to use the platform. Users have access to HTML, CSS, and Liquid—Shopify’s own templating language.

Below is a table outlining Shopify’s key features, rated based on general user reviews and industry analysis. Actual experience may vary depending on specific use cases and requirements.

How Shopify Works

As a hosted e-commerce platform, Shopify runs on its own servers, so there’s no need to purchase separate web hosting plans. Additionally, there’s no need to install extra software to start building your online store.

In the app, you have everything needed to build and promote your online store:

  • Templates
  • Payment processors
  • Integrated marketing tools
  • Blogging capabilities

Additionally, Shopify offers third-party apps from partner developers that can be integrated with any e-commerce platform to enhance functionality, analytics, and marketing.

Pricing

The following packages are Shopify’s primary offerings:

  • Basic: $39 per month, or $29/month if billed annually
  • Shopify: $105 per month, or $79/month if billed annually
  • Advanced: $399 per month, or $299/month if billed annually

Additional plans are also available:

  • Starter: $5 per month
  • Retail: $89 per month
  • Shopify Plus: starting at $2,000 per month

Note that these were the prices at the time of writing, and there may be slight changes when you read this review.

Shopify also offers a 14-day free trial, allowing you to test the platform without providing your credit card information.

Shopify Transaction Fee Distribution

  • Basic: 2.9% + 30¢ for online transactions, 2.7% + 0¢ for in-person transactions
  • Shopify: 2.6% + 30¢ for online transactions, 2.5% + 0¢ for in-person transactions
  • Advanced: 2.4% + 30¢ for online transactions, 2.4% + 0¢ for in-person transactions

Advantages of Using Shopify

Attractive Themes

You get access to 10 free themes, which may not seem like much compared to platforms like Squarespace, but they’re crafted using the latest UX design trends and research, making them very user-friendly.

Moreover, the free themes are highly responsive, adapting to different devices like desktops, smartphones, and tablets. With a premium account, you can choose from 71 themes.

Each theme offers several variations, allowing you to quickly select a style and layout that best matches your online store.

User-Friendly Interface

Shopify has a single, intuitive dashboard where you can access all the features and tools needed to operate and manage your online store, making it ideal for e-commerce beginners.

Similar to other content and e-commerce management platforms, the menu on the left provides quick access to various aspects of your store, while you can edit content in the large preview window on the right.

Importantly, Shopify lets you manage your sales channels and customer interactions effectively:

  • Social Media: Shopify helps turn Instagram posts into shoppable content and create a Facebook shop for your products or services.
  • Messenger: Simple integration lets you use Facebook Messenger as a shopping channel, send delivery and order notifications, and respond to customer inquiries.
  • Amazon Integration: You can link and manage your Amazon listings from the Shopify interface.
  • Buy Button Integration: Adding a Buy Button to any blog or website lets you embed e-commerce functionality that links directly to your store.

Note that all of the above is available through Shopify. For integration with platforms like PROM.ua and ROZETKA, third-party tools can be used, though these may require additional costs, unlike SoloMono.

The only drawback in terms of interface is the scaling. Sometimes it can be challenging to zoom in on images or content layouts.

“Online Store 2.0”

“Online Store 2.0” or OS 2.0 is an advanced content layout manager and builder designed to enhance the drag-and-drop functionality of the interface.

It’s essential for defining the content displayed on your site, offering features not available in standard themes. For example, you can easily add sections and blocks and move them around without disrupting the layout.

However, to make page changes, you need to select “Customize Theme.” It would be more convenient to just click on the desired page to go straight to the editor, but this might be something that changes in a future update.

POS (Point of Sale)

Shopify POS is a standout feature that differentiates the platform from its competitors. It provides comprehensive hardware and POS functionality.

With proprietary hardware, you can use Shopify for in-person sales, such as in a physical store, in addition to your online store, linking it to your Android or iOS device. Shopify handles all your revenue, regardless of where it’s generated.

The available hardware ranges from cash registers and receipt printers to barcode scanners.

Another significant benefit of Shopify POS is that your inventory is automatically managed and synchronized across all channels. This streamlines your work, allowing you to focus more on promoting your products or services.

One Caveat

Keep in mind that hardware is available directly through Shopify only in Australia, the US, New Zealand, Canada, the UK, and Ireland. You’ll need to find an alternative provider if you're in other countries. This may be inconvenient for users in Ukraine, where direct Shopify hardware is unavailable.

Shopify Issues After the August 2024 Update

Integration Issues with Apps. Shopify’s ecosystem relies heavily on third-party apps for advanced functionality. However, users reported compatibility issues between certain apps and Shopify's updates, leading to disruptions in inventory management and other specialized operations.

For merchants who rely on numerous integrations, keeping their stores running smoothly when apps break after an update can be challenging. As a result, some users hire dedicated teams to handle these issues, as managing and fixing all these errors can be overwhelming.

Theme Customization Limitations. While Shopify provides customizable themes for storefronts, some users noted that deeper customization requires advanced programming skills. Moreover, recent updates caused issues with existing customizations, disrupting layout designs or slowing down website performance.

SEO Limitations. Some businesses encountered challenges with Shopify’s standard SEO capabilities, especially when implementing advanced SEO strategies like custom meta descriptions, URL structuring, and managing dynamic content effectively. SEO experts pointed out that Shopify’s standard SEO features are limited compared to platforms like WordPress with WooCommerce or SoloMono.

Reporting and Analytics. Shopify’s analytics tools, while useful for basic tracking, may fall short for businesses that need more detailed insights. Advanced reporting often requires additional software or third-party services, leading to higher costs.

Comparative Analysis

Let’s be transparent and honest. In previous sections, we discussed both the pros and cons of Shopify, but now we’d like to highlight the advantages of SoloMono.

  • PRICING

As business owners, our primary task is to track finances—expenses and revenue. Shopify’s plans are considerably higher-priced, yet offer similar functionality to SoloMono. With SoloMono, you also get storage, a user-friendly interface, and efficient product management capabilities, all at a significantly lower cost.

  • INTEGRATIONS

In our view, integration is one of the product's core issues. On one hand, having multiple integration options is a big plus, enhancing sales and functionality. However, even a minor code change could “break” your store, causing hours or even days of lost sales while you work on fixes. In contrast, SoloMono offers integrations directly into the product’s code, ensuring all integrations work smoothly without disrupting business operations.

  • SIMPLICITY

Here, it’s a tie.
The general design and user experience are similar between Shopify and SoloMono. Both platforms offer a left-side admin menu for complete control over the store and a right-side workspace where most tasks take place. This setup provides a very straightforward experience, typical of e-commerce platforms. Additionally, both platforms emphasize customer support, striving to respond quickly to any user queries.

  • SPEED

As mentioned earlier, SEO and page speed optimization in Shopify are not top-tier, and links may sometimes drop out of search results or pages load slowly, negatively affecting user experience and business performance. With SoloMono, it’s quite the opposite, making it a distinguishing feature. Speed and SEO optimization are key factors for search engine rankings and, ultimately, business profitability.

  • DESIGN

Here, Shopify holds an advantage. The product employs advanced UX methodologies to continuously enhance the user experience and creates an intuitive user journey.

  • MANAGEMENT

The primary goal of e-commerce management systems is to provide high-quality, easy-to-use tools for managing products, marketing channels, analytics, design, and more. Here, neither Shopify nor SoloMono loses any points, as both meet this criterion effectively.

Start Selling Now

When all is said and done, e-commerce platforms are designed to be straightforward, so any online entrepreneur can easily create a store. But which e-commerce platform should you choose?

Both platforms offer excellent features; most are beginner-friendly and fit any budget. However, SoloMono might be the best choice, as it provides the highest technological stability, adaptability, functionality, and scalability for your online business.

We’re confident you’ll make the right choice. Just make sure your selected platform has everything needed for the smooth operation of your online store.
